Setup
Set the bench to a low incline (15–30°). Lie back with a dumbbell in each hand at shoulder height, palms facing forward.
How to do it
- Press the dumbbells up and slightly together until arms are extended.
- Pause briefly at the top without locking out hard.
- Lower with control until upper arms are just below parallel to the floor.
- Keep shoulder blades pulled back into the bench throughout.
Common mistakes
- Setting the incline too steep, turning it into a shoulder press.
- Flaring elbows out to 90°, stressing the shoulder joint.
- Bouncing the dumbbells off the chest at the bottom.
Scale it
Easier: Lighter dumbbells, reduce range slightly at the bottom.
Harder: Slow 3-second lowering, or add a 1-second pause at the bottom.
